KENNEWICK, Wash. - If a gunman walks into any one of our area high schools, police already have their battle plan mapped out.  It's all thanks to an interactive computer system.

Thanks to the program, first responders can use laptops or a nearby computer to pull up detailed maps of schools and phone numbers within minutes of a 911 call. 

The system, called Rapid Responder, was used back in 2003 when a student from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane pulled out a gun and barricaded himself inside a classroom. Within minutes, officers had all of the details of that classroom figured out by using the program. They safely evacuated over 2000 students. 

On Tuesday, area Kennewick schools are meeting with police to update their Rapid Responder data bases. One Kennewick High School staff member said the meeting is a good idea.

"What you're looking to do is come to school and help nurture kids but in the back of your mind you're thinking always about the safety of your kids," said John Rannow.

The system gives a complete run down of everything inside schools like exit doors, chemicals held in certain class rooms, and phone numbers to gas and power companies.
